SUICIDE AWARENESS
Every year thousands of individuals die by suicide, leaving behind their friends and family members to navigate the tragedy of loss. In many cases, friends and families affected by a suicide loss (often called “suicide loss survivors”) are left in the dark. Too often the feelings of shame and stigma prevent them from talking openly.
In 2016 in the United States, nearly 45,000 people died by suicide and the rate of suicide has increased every year since 2006. An estimated 1.3 million adults attempt suicide each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). More than one in five people who died by suicide had expressed their suicide intent. Men are more than three times more likely than women to take their lives. Firearms are the most common method of suicide (used in about half of all suicides). Yet, suicide is preventable. Knowing the risk factors and recognizing the warning signs for suicide can help prevent suicide.
Where and How to Donate
Carolyn and Whitney are grateful to have such an amazing group of people available to help them during this time. The generosity and willingness from others to support the girls emotionally and financially is unbelievable, and it speaks volumes to our cause. The main goal is to honor our Dad's legacy and fulfill his wishes.
Tom made it obvious how proud he was of his girls. Carolyn finishing up her last year for a Bachelor's in Nursing in Texas, as Whitney is pursuing her degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology while working full time. Carolyn and Whitney are focused on "finishing what they started" in honor of Tom.
